Essex County Branch Brook Park Lake Edges

“The Natural Backdrop of Many Memories”

Following development of a cultural landscape report for Newark’s historic Branch Brook Park, several restoration and improvement projects were identified to enhance the urban park’s accessibility and recreational value. The park’s waterway system is a series of naturalistic streams, pools, and lakes that form a spine for more than two miles of passive and active open spaces. In the park’s Southern Division, Rhodeside & Harwell designed the restoration and rehabilitation of the lake edges using the Olmsted Brothers’ planting plans and plant lists as the basis for design. Emphasis on the removal of invasive vegetation, shoreline stabilization, and maintenance of a bird habitat created a sustainable restoration of the site’s ecology. Rhodeside & Harwell also developed plans and concepts to re-establish a community connection at the southern end of the park, including bringing boat rentals and concessions back to the area.
