Nauck Town Square

A New Dimension to Nauck’s Renaissance

The village of Nauck in Arlington County, Virginia, is one of the commonwealth’s oldest African American communities, dating to the end of the Civil War. Rhodeside & Harwell led an intensive public involvement process to plan a town square that would serve as a much-needed focal point within the neighborhood, helping to preserve Nauck’s historical and cultural identity. The outreach process involved two community charrettes with a series of design workshops, an open house, and a final public hearing. Innovative concepts addressed the development of a public plaza and interpretive display elements depicting Nauck’s history. Implementation of the preferred plan is now underway.
